Heart of the Storm by Michael Buckley

Heart of the Storm

Author: Michael Buckley
Publisher HMH Books for Young Readers
Year: 2017
Genre: Fantasy
Age: YA 13+
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the third & final book in the Undertow trilogy.
It's been a very long few years for Lyric Walker & the rest of the world. First it was the Alpha invasion in Coney Island, then came the Rusalka to every beach on the east coast. Now there is a new enemy-- the Tardigrade.
The story picks up exactly where we left off in book #2. Lyric has been captured by Minerva, the new Alpha prime, & taken underwater to the hunting grounds. There she is kept prisoner & forced to huntil fish. Her only chance of survival is a special Rusalka named Husk. Husk is like Lyric, they can both hear the voice. In book #1 Lyric assumes the Voice she hears is the Great Abyss, now that she's in the hunting grounds she know that's not possible. The Great Abyss is actually a volcano where the Tardigrade live and eat people that are sacrificed to them. Husk helps Lyric escape before she becomes their next victim. Lyric finally makes it home after almost being taken by White Tower.
Once she's reunited with her family & friends the real work begins. Bex helps Lyric rebel against the government & gather an army of people that want the war to end. The group which includes Lyric's parents & the other hybrid kids partner with White Tower to free the Alpha from a holding camp & fight against the Tardigrade to save the world, hopefully for the last time.
Lyric runs into a problem along the way that can either unite all the different races or tear everything apart. Is she strong enough to survive another attack & save the world? Or will she be lost to the Great Abyss?
Likes: It was cool to have yet another species of "Alpha" added to the mix. I think the story would have gotten boring with the same battle in each book. Instead there is a new enemy everytime.
The "problem" Lyric  must overcome is sort of predictable in a way but it adds a new element to the story.
I'm happy that Lyric doesn't end up with either boy, Fathom or Riley, in the end. She is just a strong, independent girl who is a bad ass.
There was a happy ending despite all the war throughout the books.
We get to find out more about how everything came to be in the Alpha'showed world.
Dislikes: They call the White Tower camp a completely different name in this book. In book #2 it was called Tempest & in this book they call it Trident. I'm not sure why the change happened.
The ending was a little rushed. In all it was about 3  chapters of battle then the end & resolution.
Raging Sea by Michael Buckley
Raging Sea
Author: Michael Buckley
Publisher: HMH Books For Young Readers
Year: 2016
Genre: Fantasy
Age: YA 13+
The story picks up right where we left off in the first book of this series Undertow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lyric, Bex, & Arcade have fled Coney Island & are on their way to Texas to find the torture camp, called Tempest, that the government has built for the Alpha & their families. Lyric's parents here taken there after the Rusalka attacked the beach & the huge tidal wave that everyone thinks Lyric caused hit the city. They have no money, no food, & no car so the group must resort to "borrowing" things along the way. They end up meeting new people that are friends & some that are foes, including a few unfortunate run-ins with the police.

Finally in an old abandoned theater with a group of Coasters like them, the girls are apprehended by the White Tower Organization. To Lyric's surprise Doyle, her old principal, is with them. Bex & Arcade are taken but a young boy helps Lyric escape & she makes her way into the desert to find Tempest herself. Once there it's much worse than she imagined. She is forced into a cell after being electrocuted several times, fed horrible rotting food, & she is injured from her arrival. Lyric is eventually moved into a small cage where she gets to see Bex & her Dad for a brief time. It isn't long before they start experimenting on her, something she had heard happening in the camp. Fed up with the way she & all the others are being treated she makes a plan to escape. Lyric's plan doesn't work out but she finds out what Spangler, the head of White Tower, is up to. Spangler is the head, he's using Doyle to control Lyric, but someone else is pulling the strings & paying the bills.

The ultimate plan is for Lyric to train all the other kids that are hybrids like her to fight against the Prime & the Rusalka back in Coney Island. There are several problems with that scenario however, like Spangler brainwashing the kids into thinking their families have a strange disease, when he is actually holding them prisoner at Tempest, using Lyric's family & friends as blackmail against her to get what Spangler & the mysterious "client" want, & a drama-filled love story all happening besides the obvious war.

It isn't long before the kids, Lyric & her group, & the infamous "client" are all at the front lines in the heat of battle. But is the raging Sea inside Lyric enough to save the world or will she get dragged by the undertow into the Great Abyss?

Likes: This book was a lot more exciting than the last one. Part of that is because we already know the basics of the story & it's down to the main event.

One of the characters that was supposed to have died at the end of book 1 is actually alive!

Learning more about the Alpha was pretty cool & seeing some new species kept my interest.

Lyric & her family are reunited...briefly.

The ending leaves you with a giant cliff hanger! Good thing I already have the final book.

The story told in this book really sheds light on some issues we are facing in our world today like racism, police violence, & civil unrest. Even though there is a sci-fi/fantasy element to it the problem is very real.

Lyric has a badass attitude & great sense of humor despite everything that has happened.

Picture Books I've Read Recently

While checking items in this past week I came across some very cute picture books & decided to read them real quick; I wasn't disappointed. Since I used to be a school librarian, picture books are still a love of mine. However I don't get to read them very much. So here are the ones that I got to browse through this week!

In the Ocean by Maurice Pledger
These are small touch & feel board books, they have pretty pictures, lift-a-flap pages, & not too many words per page.

 By the Seashore by Maurice Pledger
These are small touch & feel board books, they have pretty pictures, lift-a-flap pages, & not too many words per page.

 Dinosaur Farm by Frann Preston-Gannon
This is an adorable book about a day working on the farm! Some of the pictures are hilarious, like when he has to clean up dinosaur poop or almost gets eaten by newly hatched dinosaurs.

 Oh Nuts! by Tammi Sauer
This is a book about 3 chipmunks who live in a zoo but get ignored since they aren't "zoo animals". They get a taste of the limelight & decide they like living hidden away in their tree.

Great, Now We've Got Barbarians! by Jason Carter Eaton
One of my co-workers recommended this book to me. It's about a kid who doesn't clean his room so barbarians take over his house & he gets in trouble & has to clean up after them. But then he floods the bathroom & has a worse problem...pirates!

Will You Be My Friend? by Nancy Tafuri
This book is ADORABLE!!! It started off a little sad. Bird & bunny live in a tree in the forest but they are not friends because bird is shy. Then one night there is a storm & bunny invites bird to stay with him. Then the next day bunny & a few other creatures help bird rebuild his house since it was destroyed in the storm & they all become friends.
