General Update

It's been a while since I gave an update on my job & my city etc. So let's do this!

I've been at my job for about 14 months now. It's been going pretty good. They town has been having a few problems but we seem to be sticking together as we overcome them which is good.

I have cataloged 1500 books since I started!

If you want to see the whole list you can look on Goodreads I'll post a link below...

Other than books I've been adding lots of movies & audiobooks. We recently got a grant & were able to buy about 100 new board books & 30 new JUV audiobooks.

We've also got a Youtube Channel you can see all of the trailer's I've made & I taught someone I work with to do them as well so we get a little variety.

I renewed the lease on my place (which is a miracle) & was able to talk my landlord into getting a new dishwasher!

I'm hoping to hit 2000 books before the first snow so stay tuned, I'll keep you guys posted when it happens.

My TBR list as of right now is:

The Dark is Rising Sequence

The Great Library series (re-read book #1)

Origin

Let me just start this review by saying I assumed this book was the final one in the series! After finishing it and going onto Goodreads I learned that there will be at least 1 more installment after this one coming out in 2017. I really like this author & series so I’m not too upset…let’s review!

In this third novel out group is still stuck on the island with the mysterious Curator. Cash is on the beach with a very sick & pregnant Yvonna; Nacho, John, & Ahab have been captured & frozen by the curator; & Sarah & Marco went to look for them but found the Curator in the process.

In order to get their family back Sarah & Marco have to find out who the Curator is & why he is o the island. It turns out the Curator is a boy named Leonis & he’s an alien! His planet that is much like Earth was destroyed about 700 years ago. In order to save it & return home they had to come to Earth. Once here his people visited Africa where they met an African tribe & gave them a very special gift.

The progenitor is an alien device that can create things using their magical advanced technology. In order to protect it, it was separated into two pieces. One piece went to the African tribe and the other remained with Leo & his family. They came to the island to get plant & animal specimens to return to their planet & rebuild it. That is what is in the frozen glass cases. There’s only one problem…how can you get a specimen if it’s extinct? That’s where the progenitor comes in. It has the ability to create life that is where the mysterious animals on the island have come from. Leo only has 1 piece of the device.

It just so happens that when the Robinson’s were shipwrecked they found a very mysterious chest with strange symbols on it aboard the HMS Moonflight. It belonged to Captain Norm & before that the previous owner was the man that commandeered Sarge’s boat. The chest contains the African piece of the progenitor & the man named Fox stole it years ago & stashed it on Shipwreck Island for safe keeping. The island they are on is actually the one he was looking for, so will he realize that & come back?

In order to free John, Ahab, & Marco the group bargains with Leo & agrees to give him the chest if he frees their family. With both pieces of the device Leo can create the plants & animals he needs & go back home. Meanwhile back on the beach Sarge’s boat has returned to seek the treasure on the island with the face rock. Fox knows it’s there somewhere but will he have to hurt the Robinson’s or Cash to find it? Or will Leo come to the rescue & the group will get off the island?

Likes: Same as other books, LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Dislikes: I thought it was the conclusion but now I’m anxiously waiting for book 4 (The End?)

This is the 2nd installment in the Shipwreck Island series. I’ve read this book twice now just like book#1.

In this book the girl that was found on the beach joins the Robinson family. Her name is Cash & she was left on the island just a few days before Sarah & the others. She was spending the summer with her Uncle Sarge who owns a boat. Two mysterious people show up looking for a boat to charter them to an island. When they arrive on Shipwreck Island the man insists that this is not the island where on a previous voyage many years ago he lost his “cargo”. In a struggle between the man & Sarge, Cash is thrown overboard & abandoned on the island.

Fast forward to when she ends up on the beach writing the strange message in the sand. Cash tells the Robinson’s that after she was marooned there she was captured and held in a cave by a man named The Curator. She doesn’t know much about him other than he’s definitely dangerous.

The group decides to build a tree house on the beach so they can be close to a possible rescue. Sarge & the mysterious couple are supposed to come back for Cash after they find what they are looking for. During the building process Yvonna is very sick & John takes Ahab with him to get supplies. It’s not long before Nacho wanders off to help them & disappears too.

A very worried Marco & Sarah go off to look for them while Cash stays with Yvonna. Marco & Sarah find their way down a path & into a valley filled with amazingly strange animals. There’s a bird with a human mouth, a rhino with a unicorn horn, a kangaroo with lion paws, & many more. Being chased by a rhinocorn isn’t all it’s cracked up to be & the siblings wander into a cave for shelter. It’s too late however before they realize they’ve wandered into The Curator’s lair. Inside the cave there are frozen glass cases containing plants, animals, & the rest of their family! Sarah & Marco vow to save them but not before running into The Curator’s trap.

Will they get free and save their family or will they become part of his collection?

Likes: This book is very similar to the first & a great quick read!

The cool animals are one of the best parts & the mystery surrounding the Curator’s lair only adds to the fun!

Shipwreck Island

Author: S.A Bodeen
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Year: 2014
Genre: Adventure
Age: JUV 9+

This book is the first in a new series that has had it’s third & most current installation come out in July 2016. I read this book originally shortly after it first came out, I had just started my new job. This is my first re-read of the books, I plan to binge all three currently out and eagerly wait for #4! I have read a few of S.A. Bodeen’s other books & I must say that they never disappoint. She has a talent for keeping you at the edge of your seat until the very last page.

In this first book of the series we meet Sarah Robinson & her dad John. John has recently married a woman named Yvonna Murillo after only knowing her a few months. Sarah is obviously upset by this since it has only been a few years since her own mother died. Yvonna has 2 sons of her own, Marco & Nacho. The Murillo family packs up their life in Texas & moves to California to live with Sarah & John shortly after the wedding.

It’s just one big happy family…NOT! The family doesn’t exactly see eye to eye, especially the kids. But to overcome that they are all going on a luxury cruise in Fiji. According to the brochure it’s supposed to be a once in a lifetime, relaxing, getaway. So imagine their surprise when the boat the HMS Moonflight isn’t everything it’s advertised to be.

On the first day at sea the family along with the four legged first mate Ahab, & their Captain Norm hit a storm that blows them off course. Norm is lost to the sea & the family plus one furry friend crash ashore on a mysterious island. The group is desperate to be rescued but they try to make the best of their stay on “Shipwreck Island” as it’s called.

They battle giant coconut crabs, see strange animals, find an abandoned dwelling, and see a beautiful waterfall. But not all of their adventures are fun…Marco, the oldest of the siblings finds an old perfume bottle in the abandoned house that when opened the smeller hears a mysterious woman’s voice. The group must also deal with a big red cloud chasing them, crazy screaming each day at the same time, and a mysterious girl that appears on the beach to give them a message…BEWARE THE C!

Likes: Short, quick, fun read. I plan on buying a copy for myself!

Great dialogue & not too much location description, just enough to know what’s happening.

Book 1

Princess Cimerone of Linderwall would like nothing more than to learn to cook, fence, & not read Latin. So she decides that instead of marrying Prince Therandil she is going to become a dragon’s princess.

She becomes the princess to a dragon named Kazul. Kazul lives in the Mountains of Morning, very far away from all the troubles of Linderwall. It isn’t long before brave knights come knocking on the door to save Cimerone, including Therandil. But she will have none of it.

In the meantime when Cimerone isn’t cooking, cleaning, & snooping in the treasure room, she runs into a wizard named Zemenar who is the Head of the Society of Wizards. He is trying to stir up trouble but Cimerone & Kazul are on to him. This is where the witch Morwen comes in to help them figure out what the wizards are up to. Morwen lives in the nearby Enchanted Forest with a bunch of cats. To get to Morwen’s, Cimerone & her friend Alianora must travel through the Caves of Night & Fire. This is a place that is of great interest to the wizards. Along the way they run into a prince that has been turned to stone from a spell.

Together Cimerone, Alianora, & the stone prince find out that the wizards plan is to poison the King of Dragons and cheat in the competition for the next King. In order to become the King of Dragon’s the dragon’s must carry Colin’s stone all the way across the mountains to the Ford of Whispering Snakes. The group come across the wizards in the forest using their staff’s to help a certain dragon cheat. So they melt the wizards much like in another classic & Kazul is crowned the new King of Dragons.

Book 2

Mendanbar is the King of the Enchanted Forest. He is new to the job but he seems to like it. The story begins with him noticing a big problem. A large part of the lush, beautiful forest has been killed. It’s brown, lifeless, and not a norm for their magical realm. So in order to find out what happened he seeks out the King of Dragons by way of Morwen’s witchy advice.

But instead of Kazul, Mendanbar finds Cimerone the Chief Cook & Librarian to the King of Dragons (her fancy new title). Cimerone informs him that Kazul has been taken & she needs help finding her as soon as possible.

In order to embark on their journey they must visit a giant named Ballimore and borrow a magic carpet. While flying high they discover that sometimes a borrowed carpet can have a bad side. They get help along the way from Telemain, a magician, who knows a carpet repair maned named Jack.
After they get back to the forest Telemain, Mendanbar, & Morwen, & Cimerone go after the wizards that have kidnapped Kazul. By way of melting them again Kazul is saved, Morwen & her cats are at peace, & Telemain has a wizard’s staff to experiment with. To complete the happy ending there is an engagement between Mendanbar & Cimorene followed by a big, beautiful wedding.

Book 3

This story begins with Morwen having a problem with a rambunctious bunny named Killer. The bunny in question eats a bad patch of clovers and ends up 6 feet tall. Then through eating something in Morwen’s garden he ends up turning into a donkey!

Morwen suspects that the Society of Wizards is to be blamed for the strange plants so she takes a trip to see the King & Queen of the Enchanted Forest. Mendanbar shares in her concern since he too has been noticing some oddities in the Forest.

In order to see what the wizards are up to Telemain, Cimerone, Killer, Morwen, some cats, & Kazul set out to find them. Along the way the meet a farmer of strange plants, end up in a swamp, a fire witch joins the group, & Killer ends up blue with wings.

They discover that Antornell and another man named Arona Michaellear Grinogion Vamist have stolen the King’s magic sword and intend to take over the Enchanted Forest with it. Meanwhile Kazul heads back to the castle to check on the Kingdom & warn the King.

The group is able to melt Antornell, much to his dismay and they take Vamist back to the castle for punishment after retrieving the sword. Unfortunaltely when they arrive back at the castle they discover the wizards have blocked the castle with a spell and trapped the King inside. Kazul decides that the only way to save the kingdom is to wait for Cimerone’s child to be born, grow up, & learn to use the magic sword to defeat the wizards. But…that won’t happen for another 16 years! So until then Kazul will guard the castle and Cimerone will keep the sword safe.

Book 4

It’s been 16 years since the last story and Daystar is old enough to wield the Sword of the Sleeping King. The only problem is he knows nothing about what’s happened! The plan will work best if he finds out on his own. So Cimerone sends him off to save the kingdom without the slightest explanation as to who he is or why he must leave with the sword.

Along the way he picks up a few friends including a lizard named Suz, and a fire witch named Shira. They eventually pick up a small dragon and Telemain while on their way to the castle to meet Kazul. In order to get there they take a short cut through the Caves of Chance and run into a quozzel. Daystar gets his hands on a key the quozzel is guarding that was given to him by a wizard. But he can’t get the key & get out of the caves without some help from some dwarves.

Finally they make it to the castle where with Daystar wielding the sword, and Kazul & her army of magical creatures they defeat the wizards and rescue Mendanbar. The story ends with a reunion of the royal family & an engagement between Telemain & Morwen.

Likes: This book has all the books in one! Each book is 200-300 pages, making the entire thing a little over 100 pages total.

The author uses references from other classic fairytales along the way & it makes the story very interesting.

SO FUNNY! The situations, dialogue, & sarcasm make this a fantastic read.
Very fun & light read overall.

Dislikes: None really…it took me a little longer than normal to finish this book because I was coming off a book hangover from a previous read.

Harry Potter & the Cursed Child

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Author: Based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, & Jack Thorne; A New play by Jack Thorne
Year: 2016
Genre: Fantasy YA
Publisher: Arthur A. Levine Books

It seems like it was only yesterday that we stood on Platform 9 ¾ at the historic King’s Cross Station where the terrific trio and the friends waved goodbye as their children boarded the Hogwarts Express for the first time.

But in fact that was almost 10 years ago!

In this new play Harry’s world comes to life on stage and once again on the page.

We join Albus and James Potter (who also have a younger, not school age sister named Lily), as well as Rose Granger-Weasley, & Scorpious Malfoy as they start their journey off to Hogwarts. Albus and James don’t really get along, but Albus quickly becomes friends with a very unlikely fellow Scorpious.

Both of the boys are placed into the same house and face the typical problems of having a famous name. Scorpious has even more to overcome in that department however. There is a rumor that through the use of a time-turner his mother was able to conceive a child with Lord Voldemort and that he’s not Draco’s son…we’ll get to that problem shortly.

The main plot of this book is that Amos Diggory and his “niece” Delphi want Harry who is now the Head of Magical Law Enforcement to give them a time-turner to go back in time and prevent Voldemort from killing his son Cedric during the Tri-Wizard Tournament.

Sometime during the span of time between the last book and now Hermione has become the Minister for Magic and time-turners have become illegal. Harry however has acquired one in a Ministry raid and Amos knows this. Harry of course refuses his request and insists that to meddle with time is a fool’s choice. But what the father’s don’t know is Albus has over heard this conversation and intends to make things right by changing the past for himself.

So along with Scorpious, Albus & him escape from the Hogwarts Express & steal a time-turner from Hermione’s office. During this time in the story we see three different outcomes of the future based on the changes of the past the boys make.

Future 1: (Out of the three futures this one is the “best” one)
The boys have stopped Cedric from getting the golden egg from the dragon in the first task of the TriWizard Tournament so…
Albus got sorted into Gryffindor and Harry has forbidden him to be friends with Scorpious. Ron is not married top Hermione but Padma Patil. Hermione teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts and is very bitter & mean. Rose thier would have been child doesn’t exist at all.

Future 2: (PLEASE NO!)
The boys have humiliated Cedric during the second task making him lose the Tournament…
Cedric became a Death Eater after he lost & he eventually killed Neville which means this gave Voldemort the chance to kill Harry, therefore Albus doesn’t exist. Dolores Umbridge is the Headmaster of Hogwarts where only purebloods can go to school. Someone called the Auguery tortures mixed blood children in the dungeons & Draco became Head of Magical Law Enforcement so Death Eaters have taken of the Ministry. Snape is still alive and teaching Potions. Hermione is in hiding beneath the Whomping Willow in a secret hideout & working for the good side with Snape as a double agent.

Future 3: (OMG!!!!!!!!!!!)
Albus, Scorpious, & Delphi go to the maze in the third task & try to keep Cedric & Harry from touching the portkey but fail. So instead they go all the way back to Halloween night 1981 in Godric’s Hollow. To the night that started it all…
Delphi is trying to keep Voldemort from killing the Potter’s but Harry, Draco, Ron, Ginny, & Hermione get a message from the boys & travel to the past to stop her. They kill her & the watch as the situation plays out to make sure they will be returning to the correct future.

In between futures 2 & 3 we learn that Delphi is not actually a Diggory but the love child of Bellatrix Lestrange & Voldemort. Her plan the whole time was to help the boys then swipe the time-turner for herself. Obviously based o outcome #3 she doesn’t succeed.

After all those awful outcomes & flashbacks there must be a happy ending right?

All is right in the world as Albus & Harry sit on the beautiful hill by the lake at Cedric’s grave.

The End
Likes: The flashbacks in this book were great & terrible all at once. You get to see Harry & Petunia visiting his parent’s grave in Godric’s Hollow before Harry knows he’s a wizard, Hagrid picking up Harry that stormy night at the island house, & the best/worst of all we see Hagrid come to pick up little Harry after his parent’s brutal murder…and future Harry looks on through a window nearby! (*COMMENSE UGLY CRYING*)

The script format made for a very quick read that was easy to follow. Since we already know the world it is mostly dialogue.

Some old characters come back to join us such as McGonagall, Hagrid, Dumbledore, Snape, Umbridge, & the Diggory’s.

Dislikes: The weirdest part of this story is that you must remember Rowling DID NOT WRITE IT! Therefore the values are a little askew. The original Harry Potter story takes pride in promotion of honesty, love, friendship, etc. But with the strange scenarios in this book they get a little lost but the most important one above all, friendship, finds its way back in the end.

14 Book Trailer

It's been a little while since I posted a review! I was going to do a normal review for this book but decided it would make a fun trailer instead, check it out below:
Here's a little mini review/overview:
I'm not normally a SCI-FI reader, fantasy, dystopian, apocalyptic...yes but heavy SCI-FI not usually.

But this book surprised me. It starts out very mysterious. Nate is a normal young guy living in LA & he's looking for a new apartment. He is talking with a co-worker & the man mentions The Kavach Building, good neighborhood, right by the Hollywood sign, & super cheap rent! What could go wrong...

Weird things keep coming up in the building like glowing green 6 legged cockroaches, Nate only has black light in his studio, & there is an underground mine shaft just below the laundry room.

It isn't until some of the other tenants also start noticing oddities about the building that it becomes serious. They trace the building & it's "creator" back to Nikola Tesla & an apocalyptic cult called "The Family". But the mystery that started a hundred years ago is still going on & The Family is still set on destroying the world with the help of their Lord, a giant Squale.

Can Nate & his gang of mystery hunters save the world before it's too late?
