I literally almost typed 2021 then realized it's 2023 already, crazy how fast time flies. </p><p> I wasn't sure if I was going to come back to blogging. I feel like when I was working at a library I had more to say because I could talk about policies, programs, & books. Now it's just me & the book facing the world. I think if I do come back & continue blogging I'm going to write about books, tv shows I'm watching, maybe recipes I try etc. I feel more disconnected from books then I ever have. I think being around them everyday was almost like a life source, giving me power, feeding off the energy of the library. That might sound crazy to most people but if you know, you know. </p><p>I also feel like it's been a few years since I read a book & was like WOW that was amazing, I really connected with that. I need to find THAT book. If you have a suggestion leave it down in the comments. </p><p>I think that's another reason I stopped blogging. I'm not even sure who is reading. Is anyone out there? </p><p>I guess I'll do a little recap from my last post or maybe if you're reading this you're new & didn't read my last post, or you've never read a post by me. I left my library job in May 2021. I had been doing library work for about 20 years in different capacities. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I miss it everyday. I also moved again for the dozenth time. I got a new job, in a new industry doing something I've never done before. I've been learning a lot & saving up more money to buy a house. I think I'm close, I just have to wait for the right moment. As for me in general I'll be 32 this year. I have an associates degree in Communications, Journalism, & Media Arts. I always wanted to go to school to be a teacher but that never panned out...story for another time. I have a little sassy black cat named Kit Kat, she is my whole world. My favorite color is purple. My favorite time of day is evening. My favorite food is mac & cheese, I'm actually eating some right now while I write this. A passion of mine is archaeology & paleontology. If I ever went back to school that's what I'd do, I think at this point the chances of that happening are small. My favorite movie is Jurassic Park. My favorite books are the Harry Potter series. I've been saying for years that I'm going to do a reread & I never have, maybe this is the year? That's enough about me. If you are reading say hi down in the comments & introduce yourself. </p><p>More later I hope...<br /></p>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-86487121278798330092021-11-14T10:54:00.000-07:002021-11-14T10:54:05.205-07:00Updates <div style="text-align: center;">I've been trying to write this since May & I'm just not sure what to say in all honestly. So here it goes, a quick update & then we'll get to the books. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I left my job at the library in May, this next week it'll have been 6 months at my new job, which is crazy to think its been that long already. I also moved about an hour away from where I used to live because the house I was renting was sold. I've been trying to save up for a house for the last 3 years & I'm hoping my saving will payoff once the market crashes. It's been a little weird not being at the library everyday since it's been that way for the last 20 years of my life. But overall the life change has been a good one. Even though I haven't been around books every day I'm still reading, probably more than ever. Less audiobooks because my new work commute is about 5 minutes twice a day, but still going strong. I think that reading is the one thing in my life that will never change, it's the one constant that keeps me going. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Now that the update is out of the way let's get to the books!</div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;">I want to put a small plug in here for a new book subscription service I started using recently. Its called Scribd. You pay $10 a month & you get access to unlimited books, audiobooks, & magazines. I downgraded my Audible subscription to just the Plus Catalog so I can finish the coffeehouse series, so this new app has a lot to offer. <br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>What have I read since my last post? </b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><u><span style="font-size: medium;">The Wizard's Dog & The Wizard's Dog Fetches the Grail by Eric Kahn Gale</span></u></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">These books were super cute! So This will be a little update on me & what I read in March & some info on what I'm planning on reading in the coming months. I don't know what I would do without Goodreads to help me keep track of all my books & reading. If you aren't using it, trust me...you need to start! </p><p style="text-align: center;">Things have been really busy at work. We starting having gardening classes that we are paying for with grant money. We've partnered with a local gardening group, the same group that helped me start the seed library. We also started a cooking show in January! So far it's going really well. We're going to keep going through the end of the year. We also found out last week that we'll be returning to "normal" over the next several months. More info on that later. </p><p style="text-align: center;">When I'm not reading I'm usually watching TV. lately I've been into The Golden Girls & Seinfeld. But I also discovered a new show called Debris that I really like. I also still watch some of my favorites like Grey's Anatomy, The Masked Singer, New Amsterdam, & 911. Some other new shows I've been enjoying are Game of Talents, Good Girls, Bridgerton, & Ginny & Georgia. </p><p style="text-align: center;">~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><p>One
of my goals for this year was to read some of the books that I own. So
in order to do that I want your help! I have picked 10 random books from
my shelves. I want you to comment below three numbers between 1 &
10. The books with the most votes I will read in the next 3 months. I
want it to be a surprise so I'm not going to tell you what the books are
yet. Check back later to see what I picked!</p><p style="text-align: center;">~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><u><b><span style="font-size: large;">March 2021 Wrap-Up</span></b></u></p><p style="text-align: center;">In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren</p><p style="text-align: center;">This book was fantastic! Kinda weird but fun & funny & I really want to read more books by these authors. <br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8cLEykSGAXk/YDbagwgqRYI/AAAAAAAANPg/ekkgiknkm34Zb_5S4mtJ1hbATWU9JhI2wCPcBGAYYCw/s2048/52962226.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1357" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8cLEykSGAXk/YDbagwgqRYI/AAAAAAAANPg/ekkgiknkm34Zb_5S4mtJ1hbATWU9JhI2wCPcBGAYYCw/s320/52962226.jpg" /></a></div> <p></p><p style="text-align: center;">Burn by Maya Banks</p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xALcbDXJ-ic/YDbacwumkiI/AAAAAAAANPc/EvfBErYPSIEDCCoOgi9t9kB5Wg_30GxcQCPcBGAYYCw/s2048/BURN.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xALcbDXJ-ic/YDbacwumkiI/AAAAAAAANPc/EvfBErYPSIEDCCoOgi9t9kB5Wg_30GxcQCPcBGAYYCw/s320/BURN.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">Murder Most Frothy, Decaffinated Corpse, & French Pressed by Cleo Coyle</p><p style="text-align: center;">Much like the Joanne Fluke series I'm now working my way on audio through this series. <br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ha4iDOAy1e4/YF-Jte3g6aI/AAAAAAAANhA/nOfV55b9y8IRp5VpYJMvdcjKKH_DvYeQACLcBGAsYHQ/s260/51PG%252BcncCnL._SX258_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="260" data-original-width="260" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ha4iDOAy1e4/YF-Jte3g6aI/AAAAAAAANhA/nOfV55b9y8IRp5VpYJMvdcjKKH_DvYeQACLcBGAsYHQ/s0/51PG%252BcncCnL._SX258_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" /></a></div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-566Ozcnv2wo/YF-JxKKz2nI/AAAAAAAANhI/R8ZX-hQHmmM4xbo-BOwrNtIWG2TSSstxQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1918/81wC0sX2dkL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1918" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-566Ozcnv2wo/YF-JxKKz2nI/AAAAAAAANhI/R8ZX-hQHmmM4xbo-BOwrNtIWG2TSSstxQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/81wC0sX2dkL.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DMC4e1D5NKU/YF-JtQBGYTI/AAAAAAAANhE/dNtYXwF5zAc_yJ1vY6aVEXZ3Zrq9nH0lQCLcBGAsYHQ/s499/51alnPfIy1L._SX309_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="311" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DMC4e1D5NKU/YF-JtQBGYTI/AAAAAAAANhE/dNtYXwF5zAc_yJ1vY6aVEXZ3Zrq9nH0lQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/51alnPfIy1L._SX309_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">If Fried Chicken Could Fly & If Mashed Potatoes Could Dance by Paige Shelton</p><p style="text-align: center;">The first book in the series we read for our book club several months ago. So I'm going to publish it now & do a kinda follow up type thing.</p><p style="text-align: center;">~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <br /></p><p style="text-align: center;">So I started the year off intending to continue or I guess get back to doing my monthly TBR & Wrap-Up lists...but it's almost March & that hasn't happened. Things have been really busy at work. I moved from being at the front desk to being in the back room. I thought this would give me more time to work on things since I wouldn't be interacting with the public as much, but let me tell you...It seems like I have more stuff to do than before but less time, which is not possible I know. So needless to say I'm planning on catching up with this post & then in April maybe I can get back on the bandwagon. The good news is that I've been reading quite a bit each month which is a step in the right direction!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><b><u><span style="font-size: large;">January 2021 Wrap-Up</span></u></b></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span>Going, Going Ganache by Jenn McKinlay</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I'm back! I know it's been several months since I published anything on my blog but let me tell you things have been crazy. I've been super busy at work & I haven't been reading as much, although I'm hoping to change that in the new year. I'll be posting my Top 10 Books of 2020 very shortly. I'm thinking I'm going to continue with making a list of books I want to read every month going into this next year. I'm not sure if I want to start doing individual reviews again, or if I just want to do the mini reviews at the end of each month. What do you guys as my readers think? Tell me down in the comments.</p><p>So what have I been doing that's keeping me away so much?</p><p>Well my library has remained open since June despite all the COVID restrictions. I think that's a great thing! We got a grant to expand our gardening classes in partnership with The White Mountain Community Garden. This meant we got new books, videos, & checkoutable materials to share with our community. We will also hopefully be having classes in the coming months that are in person. Stay tuned for more info on that!</p><p>We also got a grant to purchase a mobile kitchen! We started filming cooking shows last month & the first one premiered this week. You can visit this <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/ShowLowTV/videos" target="_blank">link</a> to see it & also see other classes that I've done & other shows our local TV station does.</p><p>I've continued with my Adult DIY series which includes take home kits & the videos (click the link above to watch).</p><p>Other than that when I'm at home I'm hanging out with my cat & reading as much as possible. Our book club that we have been doing via Zoom is dwindling in #'s but I hope we can keep it going. I was a slacker & didn't read all the books last year. I think I have 2 that I still need to catch up on. But the good news is that I already read this month's book last year & then reread it again already in this new year so I'm off to a better start.</p><p>What are some of your goals for this new year? </p><p>More later...</p><p>M</p><p><br /></p>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-10324448051466282112020-10-15T12:45:00.001-07:002020-10-15T12:45:25.322-07:00What I've Read So Far This Month: October 2020<div style="text-align: center;"> This month has been a little slower for reading than I anticipated. But I've still managed to read 3 books & I'm hoping to get at least 2 more in before the end of the month. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><u><b>Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume</b></u></span></div><div style="text-align: center;">This book came out 50 years ago this month! I decided to read it for the first time & I loved it. It was hilarious! Makes me want to read more of her stuff that I haven't read before. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><u><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IzlSZdJtuLY/X3ujmngIb_I/AAAAAAAANJs/ZJOdBmtX8GQZ5PpQyIXDddPIFEEAyv7vgCPcBGAYYCw/s475/41QHYEG3SFL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="315" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IzlSZdJtuLY/X3ujmngIb_I/AAAAAAAANJs/ZJOdBmtX8GQZ5PpQyIXDddPIFEEAyv7vgCPcBGAYYCw/s320/41QHYEG3SFL.jpg" /></a></div><b><br /></b></u></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><u><b>Through the Grinder by Cleo Coyle</b></u></span></div><div style="text-align: center;">This is book #2 in this series. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to continue with the series. I liked the story & the writing was pretty good. It's slightly different from others like this which is why I feel like there's a little bit more going on. Plus it's really long, over 500 pages! We'll see what happens. Apparently there is also a movie!? Has anyone seen it? I'm curious now. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><u><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A6X1UBdt9zs/X4il4Xd7mGI/AAAAAAAANK0/vEg-6eS2aHAYQLDeDitburuGl9Gt4ZL9wCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/81gaUCbv6dL.__BG0%252C0%252C0%252C0_FMpng_AC_UL600_SR399%252C600_.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="399" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A6X1UBdt9zs/X4il4Xd7mGI/AAAAAAAANK0/vEg-6eS2aHAYQLDeDitburuGl9Gt4ZL9wCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/81gaUCbv6dL.__BG0%252C0%252C0%252C0_FMpng_AC_UL600_SR399%252C600_.png" /></a></div><br /><b><br /></b></u></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-73594477082375684622020-10-05T16:05:00.002-07:002020-10-05T16:05:17.465-07:00September 2020 Wrap-Up & October 2020 TBR<p style="text-align: center;"> I read 6 books this last month! Mel (one of the main characters) has impressed me as far as these types of books & their characters go. She's level headed, compassionate, & smart. She doesn't go off & willy nilly do things that normally happen to these other characters in these types of books. That was until that last book! She is acting so strange & I'm not sure where things are going. </p><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ztF2F8s9uSE/Xyh1NT_WjNI/AAAAAAAANHA/fregImAQ23gs3BFD2GMHjeeaNsLCyJDiACPcBGAYYCw/s499/51puLkqST6L._SX309_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="311" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ztF2F8s9uSE/Xyh1NT_WjNI/AAAAAAAANHA/fregImAQ23gs3BFD2GMHjeeaNsLCyJDiACPcBGAYYCw/s320/51puLkqST6L._SX309_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QzVKq1VbvJ4/X3ujIYg93yI/AAAAAAAANJg/TEGmUrNvIMM5b410kBrYeMFZDB1LyY-XwCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/17681676.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="248" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QzVKq1VbvJ4/X3ujIYg93yI/AAAAAAAANJg/TEGmUrNvIMM5b410kBrYeMFZDB1LyY-XwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/17681676.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">On What Grounds by Cleo Coyle</span></p><p style="text-align: center;">I did a little mini review of this book <a href="https://whitemountainlibrarian.blogspot.com/2020/09/what-ive-read-so-far-this-month.html" target="_blank">here.</a></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FYAmIUe9n8Q/X1ez3m0fubI/AAAAAAAANII/ELmk4XT2IkYJIA2B8rDqQQ6m0XIgVaqbACPcBGAYYCw/s1935/81KUY273qWL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1935" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FYAmIUe9n8Q/X1ez3m0fubI/AAAAAAAANII/ELmk4XT2IkYJIA2B8rDqQQ6m0XIgVaqbACPcBGAYYCw/s320/81KUY273qWL.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-size: x-large;"><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></p>The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix</span><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">I did a little mini review of this book <a href="https://whitemountainlibrarian.blogspot.com/2020/09/what-ive-read-so-far-this-month.html" target="_blank">here.</a> It was creepy & FANTASTIC!!!</p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YDFPGQ8R1is/X1e3jJloISI/AAAAAAAANI0/pgn4xPFmzDIbzmmBNNubTSO70L9k7rS3wCPcBGAYYCw/s2048/81iB32Cl0OL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1384" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YDFPGQ8R1is/X1e3jJloISI/AAAAAAAANI0/pgn4xPFmzDIbzmmBNNubTSO70L9k7rS3wCPcBGAYYCw/s320/81iB32Cl0OL.jpg" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><u>October 2020 TBR</u></b></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Are You There God? I have to admit that I like not having to write things down & remember everything while I'm reading. I like just enjoying a book, or in this case devouring one, I'll get to that in a bit. So far this month I've read 4 books so I wanted to give a little update, one of them was insane, I have to get my thoughts out about it!</p><p style="text-align: center;">I talked about the 2 books I had read already when I did my monthly TBR, you can go back & look at those if you want. So far I've enjoyed everything I've read this month & we're only half way in. You can follow me on Instagram under the same name & vote on my next pick if you want. </p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>On What Grounds by Cleo Coyle</u></b></span></p><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This was our book club pick for this month. I have been really struggling with reading the book club books the last few months so I was really proud I caught up on all of them but one so far this month. I also finished this one 2 weeks early! This is the first in a series about a NYC coffee house manager/part owner who discovers her assistant manger injured one morning on the job. She has a hunch it's not an accident & naturally with this type of story it wasn't. She is involved...kinda...with her ex husband who is smoking hot. Then there's another love interest, as is the way with this stories. This book is very similar to our other book club books in some ways, but also different in enough ways that I want to continue the series on my own. That has only ever happened once before with a series we started & I finished the whole thing, almost 30 books last year. I'm excited to continue this one. I will say I'd recommend this book for coffee drinkers, there is a lot of tips & tricks she gives along the way. I'm not sure how many, if any, are true but they sound pretty legit. I listened to it on audio & read which is my favorite thing to do these days, I can get through books in half the time doing that. Audio reader wasn't bad, good voices with different accents. </span><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FYAmIUe9n8Q/X1ez3m0fubI/AAAAAAAANII/ELmk4XT2IkYJIA2B8rDqQQ6m0XIgVaqbACPcBGAYYCw/s1935/81KUY273qWL.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1935" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FYAmIUe9n8Q/X1ez3m0fubI/AAAAAAAANII/ELmk4XT2IkYJIA2B8rDqQQ6m0XIgVaqbACPcBGAYYCw/s320/81KUY273qWL.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix</b></u></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span> </span><span> This
is the book that was voted on by my Instagram & Facebook followers.
I was seeing things online about it so when our library got it in I
checked it out. I honestly 100% thought that it was gonna be just
another vampire romance book but oh dear lord was I wrong! Scary,
horrifying, gross, disturbing, evil, skin crawling, enchanting, crazy,
amazing...I could keep going. It was so gross at times I could feel
goosebumps on my arms & I felt like I might throw up but I couldn't
stop. It was like a train wreck & I just couldn't look away. Once I
started I couldn't stop, I devoured it in a matter of hours over several
days. I have barely slept for the last 3 days between reading &
listening on audio. I was also taking it to work & reading on my
lunch & I almost couldn't put it down. This is one of the craziest
books I have ever read but I loved it. I really want to read more by
this author. You will NEVER in your life read a vampire book like this.
RECOMMEND RECOMMEND RECOMMEND MUST READ!</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YDFPGQ8R1is/X1e3jJloISI/AAAAAAAANI0/pgn4xPFmzDIbzmmBNNubTSO70L9k7rS3wCPcBGAYYCw/s2048/81iB32Cl0OL.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1384" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YDFPGQ8R1is/X1e3jJloISI/AAAAAAAANI0/pgn4xPFmzDIbzmmBNNubTSO70L9k7rS3wCPcBGAYYCw/s320/81iB32Cl0OL.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-81081516668941220692020-09-08T10:05:00.001-07:002020-09-08T10:05:08.168-07:00August 2020 Wrap-Up & September 2020 TBR<p style="text-align: center;"> I have been a little out of the picture in the last few months. Admittedly between packing, then moving, & now settling in reading hasn't been the first thing on my mind. This even goes for my book club. I felt so bad that the last 3 months I hadn't read the book at all or I did not finish it before the meeting. So now I'm doing a little better & I'm starting back at it. I feel like when I get tired I don't have as much motivation to read. I will also say that I haven't been writing an individual review for the few books that I did finish because it felt nice to just read the book & enjoy it, rather than have to remember everything for the review, is that a bad thing? We'll see what happens going forward. I like having a creative outlet & I also like writing but is anyone other than my family even reading this?</p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><u>August 2020 Wrap-Up</u></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">State of the Onion by Julie Hyzy</span></p><p style="text-align: center;">This was our June book club book. It is first in a series that I believe is ongoing. We follow a woman that works in the White House kitchen & is up for a promotion to executive chef. It was really interesting to see the inner working of the White House, or at least I'm assuming the book is based on true things. I liked this book because unlike some of the other ones we have read I didn't know who the killer was right away. </p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M3q3DxUpmVI/XtHT735CzhI/AAAAAAAAM3U/4AZV5fiCxQ862l7K12KBVVrXLvuwOwx_ACPcBGAYYCw/s475/2261571.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="293" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M3q3DxUpmVI/XtHT735CzhI/AAAAAAAAM3U/4AZV5fiCxQ862l7K12KBVVrXLvuwOwx_ACPcBGAYYCw/s320/2261571.jpg" /></a></div><u style="font-size: xx-large;"><p style="text-align: center;"><u>September 2020 TBR </u></p></u><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">These are the books I've already finished this month that I started in August:</p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Red Velvet Revenge by Jenn McKinlay</span></p><p style="text-align: center;">This was the book club pick for August & I was about half way in when the meeting happened. It is 4th in an ongoing series about a cupcake shop in Scottsdale. These books are some of my favorites that we've read & based on the cliffhanger that happened at the end of this one, that is very out of the norm, I want to keep reading the series. </p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ztF2F8s9uSE/Xyh1NT_WjNI/AAAAAAAANHA/fregImAQ23gs3BFD2GMHjeeaNsLCyJDiACPcBGAYYCw/s499/51puLkqST6L._SX309_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="311" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ztF2F8s9uSE/Xyh1NT_WjNI/AAAAAAAANHA/fregImAQ23gs3BFD2GMHjeeaNsLCyJDiACPcBGAYYCw/s320/51puLkqST6L._SX309_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-size: x-large;"><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></p><div style="text-align: center;">The Honey Don't List by Christina Lauren</div></span><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">Did you know that "Christina Lauren" is actually 2 women that write under a combined name? I didn't until I started reading this book. I have heard good things about these authors in the past but this was my first time reading a book by them. I really liked it! I want to read more. perfect for fans of Lauren Weisenberger & Sophie Kinsella. This book was great on audio because there it's told from 2 different view points so there is a male & a female reader. It follows the girl who is an assistant to a big wig hollywood tv design couple & the shows "engineer". There's drama, romance, & it was really funny. </p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X8HHPIAAImM/XtHS9gE8tDI/AAAAAAAAM2c/X_Dk_0xE7eYlXqfhFugyJyol9MucxUDHgCPcBGAYYCw/s675/51086670.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="675" data-original-width="435" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X8HHPIAAImM/XtHS9gE8tDI/AAAAAAAAM2c/X_Dk_0xE7eYlXqfhFugyJyol9MucxUDHgCPcBGAYYCw/s320/51086670.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-size: x-large;"><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></p><div style="text-align: center;">Ratscalibur by Josh Lieb</div></span><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">I just happened to see this book come in on audio in the book drop & I was like WHAT! I will say it was very strange, kinda gross at times, but very fun. Great kids book if you like to read juv lit. It says it's the first in a series but there has never been anymore & it came out years ago??? Not sure what is up with that. I had book #3 in my audible library, but I found #4 at my library on CD. I wasn't quite finished with the 4th book when I got home on Sunday night so I took it inside thinking oh I only have 1 disc left I can finish it tonight. But as some of you may know I'm moving in a few weeks so I had packed my CD played. Had to get creative & use my librarian skills to finish the book, but it was worth it!</div><div><br /></div><div>These books are super fun for kids & adults alike! We are once again back in Saint Pete Beach Florida with our main character P.T. Wilkey. P.T., his mom, & grandpa live at his grandpa's motel, the Wonderland. His grandfather shares a name with another famous Florida fun in the sun attraction destination connoisseur, they have quite the rivalry in P.T.'s grandpa's mind. P.T's best friend & long time guest Gloria Ortega. Gloria & her dad live in the hotel while her dad works for the small town TV channel, trying to work his way up to the top, ESPN Sports. The 2 kids have gotten into some interesting situations over the course of the books, these last 2 books are no exception. </div><div><br /></div><div>In Sandapalooza Shake-up there is a sand castle building competition on the beach. The Wonderland has kinda partnered with their long time rivals next door, The Conch Reef Resort. The Wonderland has some very special guests staying with them since they became famous in the last book for have a movie filmed there. There is a jewelry heist that starts quite a commotion at the motel. But Gloria & P.T. are on the case!</div><div><br /></div><div>Then in Beach Battle Blowout a magazine is holding a contest for the best family fun attraction in Florida! The Wonderland is on the short list because their long time rival, Disney, isn't allowed in for the first time ever. They must impress the judges & win the competition for P.T.'s grandpa. </div><div><br /></div><div>The audio narrator of all the books is fantastic at doing different voices, he can do kids, adults, men, women, you name it. That helps a lot when you are listening to the story. I also like that it's the same reader for all the books, it drives me nuts when they change reads mid series! </div><div><br /></div><div>The stories are always fun, there's a little mystery, some hi-jinks, a bad guy that's bound to loose, & a little twist at the end. In book #4 I knew what the twist was going to be from the beginning. But in #3 I wasn't entirely sure, there was a lot of different suspects for the theft. </div><div><br /></div><div>The other thing that has always been talked about but is mostly in the background is P.T.'s dad. He apparently left when he was little & P.T. knows that, but it hasn't ever really been an issue. It seems like in book #3 that he really starts to wonder about his dad & makes more of an effort to try & find him then in the other books. Maybe he will find him someday???</div><div><br /></div><div>There is a slight mention of one of the other series by this author in this book & I always like when they do that. </div><div><br /></div><div>I really hope there will be more books in this series & since I have enjoyed these books along with this author's Lemoncello's Library series I plan on reading more by him in the future. </div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-56112229552226602112020-07-06T09:17:00.001-07:002020-07-06T09:17:32.338-07:00June 2020 Wrap-Up & July 2020 TBR<div style="text-align: center;">This month I did a whirlwind reading marathon & finished a series that has been on my TBR list for almost 10 years! There is 7 stories included that tell parts of the original story from different character view points. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I really enjoyed the original series so I was excited for this book. I've never really gotten into the whole "novella" story thing with any books I've read. I have to say that if you skipped this book you wouldn't be missing out on much. I enjoyed it overall but I also feel like if you didn't read this book you would still understand & enjoy the series. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>My 2 favorites stories were The Queen & The Favorite. These were the stories of Queen Amberly & her selection in which she married King Clarkson & Marlee & Carter's love story. Marlee was one of my favorites in the series, I was really sad to see what happened to her, but everything worked out in the end. In Queen Amberly's story we learn more about the country & the caste system. We also get to see maybe why Clarkson was such an awful man? I also kinda felt bad for Celeste. She really wanted to have a great life & I think she learned more about herself & more about the world in general when she competed in the selection. Then after reading her story I remembered what happened to her, very sad. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>This book is worth a read if you want to see the different perspectives or enjoy some of the other, not necessarily main characters. <br /></div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-51286247951505831212020-06-10T19:13:00.001-07:002020-06-10T19:13:31.071-07:00The Crown by Kiera Cass<div>The Crown</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1hRNeMm2bVs/XuGHQu32iqI/AAAAAAAAM7I/HEpDxeNd9ok0mNPlP3aCLy9-EZUZzJDkgCK4BGAsYHg/s2409/81Sfo9CgTjL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2409" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1hRNeMm2bVs/XuGHQu32iqI/AAAAAAAAM7I/HEpDxeNd9ok0mNPlP3aCLy9-EZUZzJDkgCK4BGAsYHg/s320/81Sfo9CgTjL.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Author: Kiera Cass</div><div>Publisher: Harper Teen</div><div>Year: 2016</div><div>Genre: Dystopian/Romance</div><div>Age: YA 13+</div><div>Page Count: 278 <br /></div><div>Rating: <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/s550/4-stars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="162" data-original-width="550" height="59" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/w200-h59/4-stars.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div><div>This is book #5, the final book in The Selection series. There is one more book that has all the novellas combined together. I'll be reading that one next. It's around 500 pages so it should keep my interest for a while. I started this book last night at about 9 p.m. & I was able to finish it today. I don't normally get to read at my job, despite what most people think working in a library is like LOL but lately things have been a little different. That is going to change next week so I'm kinda bummed I'll be missing out on some extra reading time. That's really how I was able to get through these books so fast. Anyway, let's get into it...</div><div><br /></div><div>This series has been one of my favorites! I will definetly be reading more of her books. I think the ending was a little predictable but I'm not disappointed in that. I was super excited to find out who Eadlyn picked right up until the last second! I do think her decision about the monarchy was a little strange. She's the queen so she can "decide" but just announcing it without letting anyone know or seeking help from her advisers was a kinda rash. But she's young & it's fictional so anything can happen! I'm really happy with Eadlyn's choice, she seems like she will be very happy. I would be happy to see more books that continue the story. Overall this series is very engaging, has intriguring characters, a semi-complex storyline, & a great romance aspect. I would recommend it for fans of books like The Hunger Games. It does have some violence but not the same as series like The Hunger Games where kids are killing eachother. It also has the romance you look for in a YA book but it's not over the top or unbelieveable. I liked Eadlyn's story more than America's which kinda surprises me since we got to see more of America throughout the series. I think it's because I relate to Eadlyn more than I do her mother. I really needed a great series to bust me out of my reading slump & kick-off summer reading. There were times I was laughing out loud, even in public, times I was tearing up, & times I couldn't read fast enough. The audiobook books aren't awful, I didn't like the first read in the first 3 books, I liked the girl that read the last 2 books the best, she had more inflection & life to her voice. I didn't really listen to much to the last 2 books though because I was reading more & faster than I could be read to. I'm going to look into more series like this one, there is one by Ally Condie that on Goodreads is in the "Readers Also Enjoyed" section under this series, it's the Matched trilogy, have you read it? Did you like it? Let me know down in the comments. I'm off to read the novella book, stay tuned for more reviews in the future. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-77335271628175543692020-06-09T20:24:00.002-07:002020-06-09T20:24:32.355-07:00The Heir by Kiera Cass<div>The Heir</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gSfzF9dVyC8/XuBOW89VyzI/AAAAAAAAM6c/rodHyN_-biYnIDAq4V8_86R8Di4iDlUcgCK4BGAsYHg/s488/GUEST_2722274e-7239-4334-98ad-7a8e772807cd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="488" data-original-width="488" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gSfzF9dVyC8/XuBOW89VyzI/AAAAAAAAM6c/rodHyN_-biYnIDAq4V8_86R8Di4iDlUcgCK4BGAsYHg/s320/GUEST_2722274e-7239-4334-98ad-7a8e772807cd.jpg" width="323" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Author: Kiera Cass</div><div>Publisher: Harper Teen</div><div>Year: 2015</div><div>Genre: Dystopian/Romance</div><div>Age: YA 13+</div><div>Page Count: 342</div><div>Rating: <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/s550/4-stars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="162" data-original-width="550" height="59" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/w200-h59/4-stars.jpg" width="200" /></a></div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div><div>This is book #4 in The Selection series. I only have 1 more book & then the novella companion novels to read. Those have been organized into one book called "Happily Ever After". I'm hoping to have both of those done in the next week, but it might be sooner at the rate I'm going through these books. I want to read another series after this one, put a suggestion down in the comments. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>It's been 20 years & a new selection has begun!</div><div><br /></div><div>America & Maxon fell in love despite their world being turned upside down. Now two decades have passed & the world they knew has changed thanks to their efforts, but the people still aren't happy. To quell the public & give them hope they decide to put their eldest daughter, & first ever female heir through the greatest test of all. Eadlyn Schreave is 18 & has been preparing her whole life to be the first ever queen of Illea. She has three siblings, including a twin brother born seven minutes after her. Unfortunately nothing could prepare her for something as crazy as the selection. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>One of the things that annoys me the most about Eadlyn is that she is just as anxious & undecisive as her mother was at her age. I admire her for being so independent & strong & not needing a man to complete her (PREACH sister!) but...because she is going to be queen there are certain obligations she has to uphold, one of those being producing her own heir. That being said, two people are required to do that. That is where the problem lies. So the next selection will begin. I have to admit I like this book a little better than the others in the series so far. I think I feel more connected to Eadlyn because she is like me in a lot of ways. I also think I like these books so much because of one of my favorite TV shows...The Bachelor! I loathe that show so much! But it's so good I can't look away at the same time, do you ever feel that way about something? So I have one more book to complete the story. I have to admit that I'm gonna be sad when this series is over. I also can't believe it took me almost 10 years to read it! I'm also WAY more excited for the show now! Overall I like Eadlyn & I like a lot of the boys she has to choose from. I think it's gonna come down to Kile or Erik (even though he's not really a contestant). But some of them have potential too like Henri, he's so sweet even though they don't speak the same language. Then of course the book has to end with a huge cliffhanger, disaster, drama episode. All of the previous ones kinda did too so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised by that. I'm hoping everything works out & I'm also happy I already have the other books & I don't have to wait.So on to the next! Stay tuned for more reviews soon!<br /></div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-36590045556270624102020-06-05T18:23:00.001-07:002020-06-05T18:23:19.506-07:00The One by Kiera CassThe One<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JU5qTmmrp5c/XtrRk8PmUhI/AAAAAAAAM5k/MlhWCIJS8FsFt7DELreBy2ehb5sUa8k6wCK4BGAsYHg/s500/519KJEnLObL.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="325" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JU5qTmmrp5c/XtrRk8PmUhI/AAAAAAAAM5k/MlhWCIJS8FsFt7DELreBy2ehb5sUa8k6wCK4BGAsYHg/s320/519KJEnLObL.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Author: Kiera Cass</div><div>Publisher: Harper Teen</div><div>Year: 2014</div><div>Genre: Dystopian/Romance</div><div>Age: YA 13+</div><div><br /></div><div>Audio Publisher/Year: Harper Collins/ 2014</div><div>Audio Reader: Amy Rubinate</div><div>Audio Length: 7 hours & 25 minutes</div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: </div><div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/s550/4-stars.jpg" style="clear: left; display: inline; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="162" data-original-width="550" height="59" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/w200-h59/4-stars.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div><div>This is book #3 out of 5 in The Selection series. This is also the end of our first story between Maxon & America. Apparently from reading the descriptions of the next few books they take place about 20 years in the future with their daughter's own selection. </div><div><br /></div><div>This book I think was the best of them all! The ending was like WOW! There will be spoilers in this review so if you don't want to know then turn back now...... </div><div><br /></div><div>So obviously Maxon chooses America. I think we all knew that was going to happen from the beginning. But they are annoyingly hot & cold right up until the very, very end! Aspen does find love with Lily which I think is good because she had some problems with her family etc the entire time. Plus she is a lower caste like Aspen was so when they get married she will become a 2, it's a win-win scenario.</div><div><br /></div><div>The battle against the rebels finally comes to a tragic end. America's dad (who we learn is actually a secret Northern rebel), the king, the queen, Celeste, & several others are killed by rebels dressed as guards on the night of the big proposal. We also learn that Kriss is a Northern rebel as well, it seems ironic that it comes down to her & America in the end. Maxon is wounded but he recovers & things are right in the world. Their rebel friends including an Illea descendant come to their aid just like they promised too. </div><div><br /></div><div>Maxon also shows America a plan to get rid of the caste system. I'm hoping to hear more about that in the next few books. Overall I would say it was a great ending! I was freaking out the last few chapters. I feel like there could be more to the story or like an in between book, so I'm hoping some of the details get filled in with the next few books, but we'll see what happens. Stay tuned for more reviews soon!<br /></div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-45529692881172503162020-06-04T09:23:00.003-07:002020-06-04T09:23:57.995-07:00The Elite by Kiera CassThe Elite<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z5HvsJHGcCM/XtkZOeNSGDI/AAAAAAAAM40/PguPbym4OTEQwsfioxBlin4uNPmcn1KlQCK4BGAsYHg/s499/51zenYwNmPL._SX331_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="333" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z5HvsJHGcCM/XtkZOeNSGDI/AAAAAAAAM40/PguPbym4OTEQwsfioxBlin4uNPmcn1KlQCK4BGAsYHg/s320/51zenYwNmPL._SX331_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Author: Kiera Cass</div><div>Publisher: Harper Teen</div><div>Year: 2013</div><div>Genre: Dystopian/Romance</div><div>Age: YA 13+</div><div><br /></div><div>Audio Publisher/Year: Harper Collins/2013</div><div>Audio Reader: Amy Rubinate</div><div>Audio Length: 7 hours & 43 minutes</div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/s550/4-stars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="162" data-original-width="550" height="59" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/w200-h59/4-stars.jpg" width="200" /></a></div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div><div>I finished this book last night & OMG!!! It was like 10 p.m. & I had to keep reading into the next book because I had to find out what was happening. Fast forward, I was up until like 1 a.m. So now I'm tired but it was worth it. I'm about 1/3 of the way into book #3. This is the kind of series I needed to get me out of my reading slump. </div><div><br /></div><div>In book #2 the selection girls are narrowed down to the final 6. The rebels are attacking from both the North & the South. The northerners are the "peaceful" rebels & the southerners are the ones that kill people during their attacks. We get to find out more about their leader as the story continues into the next book. America is starting to stand up for what she believes in which is both a good & a bad thing. She is not very popular with the king & that is causing problems between him & Maxon. We also get to learn more about the history of the country. It's not pretty, which why would it be? But it's a lot more ugly than I expected. I think that going forward, now that I've read a little bit of the next book, a big change is coming, but will it be enough? </div><div><br /></div><div>America is still going back & forth between Aspen & Maxon. I'm kinda frustrated with her & her way of doing it though. She seems totally devoted to Aspen. She tells him she loves him, she needs him, etc. But with Maxon he has confessed his feelings for her & she just kinda absorbs it then shoves him away (sometimes literally). They fight a lot, which I know is part of relationships, but they are very hot & cold towards one another. I don't see how that could possibly work out in the end. I also feel kinda bad for Aspen, I know who she is going to choose in the end but I don't know how she is going to get there right now. </div><div><br /></div><div>Overall though the book started out interesting then with each book the story escalates further along keeping your interest. I already have book #4 & #5 so that I can go right into them after finishing the next. This is a time when I LOVE ebooks even more then normal because I can seamlessly go from one to the next. Stay tuned for the next review hopefully soon! </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-39739352140316814792020-05-31T12:43:00.001-07:002020-05-31T12:44:01.122-07:00The Selection by Kiera Cass<div>The Selection</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fKkWOD7K3Jc/Xq7xjrl5jUI/AAAAAAAAMMk/Eel9JtzcMJs4l-EjopIPMTegz1zPfEMSwCK4BGAsYHg/10507293.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="314" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fKkWOD7K3Jc/Xq7xjrl5jUI/AAAAAAAAMMk/Eel9JtzcMJs4l-EjopIPMTegz1zPfEMSwCK4BGAsYHg/s320/10507293.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Author: Kiera Cass</div><div>Publisher: Harper Teen</div><div>Year: 2012 <br /></div><div>Genre: Dystopian/Romance</div><div>Age: YA 13+</div><div>Page Count: 220<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Audio Publisher/Year: Harper Audio/ 2012<br /></div><div>Audio Reader: Amy Rubinate<br /></div><div>Audio Length: 8 hours<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/4-stars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="162" data-original-width="550" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/s320/4-stars.jpg" width="320" /></a></div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div><div>This is book #1 in The Selection series, there is a total of 5 books not counting the novellas. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I have had this book on my ereader since it came out but never read it! I heard that it was becoming a series on Netflix so I thought why not now? I'm excited to see the show when it comes out & I'm very happy to have started the series finally. It is a finished series as of 2016 which means I don;t have to wait 5 years for all the books to come out, whoo! It's been a while since that's happened to me. Normally I see these awesome books & can't buy them quick enough then I get so mad when I read them & fall in love but have to wait 3+ years for them all to be published. At this point I've been burned enough that I try do some research & be as calm as possible waiting for publication, because you know I have NOTHING else to read, right? So let us begin...</div><div><br /></div><div>I wasn't sure if I was gonna like this series when it first started. It's definetly on my radar as far as what I like to read. It reminded me alot of The Hunger Games & The Glittering Court. Actually it's kinda of a perfect hybrid of those. The Glittering Court is a series I mistakenly started before all the books were out, they are now, it's on my infinite TBR list. The audio reader for these books isn't the greatest, her voice is very monotone & kind of low for a woman, so I feel like it's better maybe in book form. But I got the audiobook & I was kinda going back & forth, something I do freqently so I can finish books faster. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I wasn't really sold on this book until about 15 chapters in. It was a little predictable in the beginning, but it's an almost 10 year old YA book so what else can I say. It came out when books like this were popular. This story though has something other than just brute strength, violent killing, & romance like some of the others. It was a spark I guess you could say. I can't quite describe it. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The main character America has something going on other than a love triangle, but I don't know what is it yet. Much like The Hunger Games & Twilight, etc there are sides when it comes to the boys she has to choose from. I am definetly on Team Maxon. I think Aspen is a user & a jerk & I just known something bad is going to happen with him & America so she needs to just stay away from him! That's kinda hard though considering he's her personal guard, we'll have to wait & see what happens with that. I really like Maxon! I feel like he is a shielded, rich kid but he also seems to have a genuine interest in the people & the country that his family or maybe "they" (you know...the man, them, the bureaucracy) are keeping from him. I think he could definetly be a good leader if he had all the facts & was given the chance. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I was a little confused when the book first started about the setting, like where they are in the world or when it is? From what I've gathered they live in a place called Illea, named after it's founder/savior. The United States as we know it collapsed after several world wars, maybe 4, so 2 more then have currently happened in our present time. Then China took over & we kinda merged with them??? It's all a little vague, but it's supposed to be a fantasy world unlike our own. They have television & electricity & modern plumbing but no technology so far. Maybe that's what caused the world to collapse? I'm hoping to find out more about that in the next few books.</div><div><br /></div><div>So tell me reader, did you read this book? Did you like it? What are some of your thought, tell me down in the comments. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Stay tuned for more reviews on the rest of the series!<br /></div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-51988804845172245722020-05-29T20:33:00.002-07:002020-05-29T20:34:03.455-07:00May 2020 Wrap-Up & June 2020 TBR<div style="text-align: center;">This month I've read three books & I'm hoping to get one more in this weekend for a total of four, not too bad! I have the 3rd one in my Audible library & I got book #4 from my library on CD. I love this author! He's one of my favorites. I like his Mr. Lemoncello series better than this one if I had to pick, but they are both good overall & I enjoy them both in book/ebook form & audio. The books have cute, funny pictures & little cartoons in them which is a fun addition to the book. This series also has a great reader! His voices are awesome, I really like Grandpa's voice but Mr. Conch is good too. The length of the book makes it a quick read, I read/listened to it in about 2 days. Much like the first book this story is hilarious, fast paced, fun, & a little quirky. The story is perfect for kids & adults alike. It has funny moments that kids will love like a monkey throwing poop, but also adult situations like trying to save a family business. They hint at the next book in this one, the kids talk about a sand castle building contest, I'm excited to read it soon. Overall great fun for you or your family can read together!<br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div> </div><div><br /></div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-88478924575856224802020-05-18T13:34:00.003-07:002020-05-18T13:35:04.899-07:00The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan The Bookshop on the Corner<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sV047tsMO_A/Xq7xVD28lbI/AAAAAAAAMMg/IxVRhsPeOWIifUnkxmTwSGrnNpzMNJQDQCK4BGAsYHg/28372019.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="265" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sV047tsMO_A/Xq7xVD28lbI/AAAAAAAAMMg/IxVRhsPeOWIifUnkxmTwSGrnNpzMNJQDQCK4BGAsYHg/s320/28372019.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Author: Jenny Colgan</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Publisher: Harper Collins Publishers</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Year: 2016</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Genre: Fiction</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Age: Adult 18+</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Page Count: 272</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Audio Publisher & Year: Harper Audio 2016</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Audio Reader: Lucy Price-Lewis</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Audio Length: 9 hours & 13 mins</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Rating: <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/4-stars.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="162" data-original-width="550" height="59" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/w200-h59/4-stars.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This was our Cook the Books book club pick for May 2020, we had to meet a week earlier than normal because of the holiday next week. I read this book over the last 2 days & I really liked it. We have previously read another book by this author that I also really enjoyed. The audio reader was very good in this book if you like a reader with an accent.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Overall the story, characters, & setting of this story were all excellent. The only thing that was a little predictable was Nina, our main character, ending up falling for her landlord, Lennox the farmer.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The setting couldn't get any better! Our story starts off in London, England & Nina ends up leaving her job for a new adventure in Kirrinfief, Scotland. I didn't realize that Scotland is so far up there that it's light out almost all summer & dark almost all winter. They also get to see the northern lights which I've always wanted to do. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Nina our main character is very relatable. I felt like she was me in a way but I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to give up my entire life & move to a different country...but you never know, right? She has 2 love interests, one of them turns out to be not so good for her even though both she & you as the reader I think really want it to happen. She ends up with the farmer Lennox, everything kinda falls into place so maybe he's the right choice after all? Her best friend is hilarious & over the top, everyone needs someone like her in their lives. There is a situation in this book involving 2 kids & a seemingly absent mother. I was very worried about how their story was going to turn out but I was pleasantly surprised.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I am really excited to continue the story in book #2 & book #3 comes out in a few weeks so I'm hoping my library will get it. </div></div><div><br /></div>Maizie McMillanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11942328066609518859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3341848923246147161.post-32636545146150902982020-05-15T14:35:00.001-07:002020-05-15T14:35:11.056-07:00Coconut Layer Cake Murder by Joanne FlukeCoconut Layer Cake Murder<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DXunKG4bFy0/Xr8G4TGDBUI/AAAAAAAAMNc/5mByvkh16WkFSRHo3jjrw-9aJd7rGS-SQCK4BGAsYHg/81lICH6T8%252BL.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2417" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DXunKG4bFy0/Xr8G4TGDBUI/AAAAAAAAMNc/5mByvkh16WkFSRHo3jjrw-9aJd7rGS-SQCK4BGAsYHg/s320/81lICH6T8%252BL.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Author: Joanne Fluke</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Publisher: Kensington Books</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Year: 2020</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Genre: Cozy Mystery </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Age: Adult 18+</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Page Count: 222</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Audio Publisher & Year: Recorded Books 2020</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Audio Reader: Suzanne Toren</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Audio Length: 8 hours & 53 mins</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Rating: <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/4-stars.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="162" data-original-width="550" height="59" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO_FGOCmQhE/VzI-NuOBI8I/AAAAAAAAGmA/X6Nm1tRwuD8x7DKuUz2KHMsPqlUliHHdACK4BGAsYHg/w200-h59/4-stars.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I think it looks the same to you guys but they updated the Blogger website since I last posted, I'm gonna have to play around with the new features. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is book # 25 in the Hannah Swensen series. This review may contain spoilers from previous books so read with caution. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Hannah has been in a never ending love triangle between herself, Norman the dentist, & Mike the sheriff's officer. Even when she was "married" to Ross & now that he's gone & life has moved on she is back at it again with the 2 of them. It seems like in this book though she is leaning heavily towards Norman. I've always liked him better than Mike though in all honesty. I'm hoping at some point she picks one & puts them out of their misery but I don;t know what would happen to the story if that happened. So...we'll see. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In this book Hannah has to come back to Lake Eden in the dead of winter to help her sister's boyfriend, Lonnie...maybe he's her fiance, I can't remember... because he's gotten himself in some trouble. The same basic story line is followed where the crime is committed then Hannah investigates & ends up trapped somewhere with the killer that she magically didn't know was there until it's too late & the boys have to come & rescue her. In this book Hannah also has a dream about what would have happened if she was pregnant with Ross's baby & it seems nice. This is something hat confuses me about her. She seems to want a family & a husband & a grand life. She has 2 men right in front of her for several years that also want that. But she doesn't pick either of them? I know it's just fiction but come on!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anyway...the recipes in this book were good as usual. Lots of eating & baking. I'll include one down below. The next book in this series doesn't come out until September & it'll be the Christmas special one which usually doesn't have anything to do with the main story. I'm happy to have caught up on these & I really enjoy listening to them on audio. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I did a little better in April then I have the past few months but I didn't read as much as I wanted to. I'm finding it hard to concentrate on reading or tv or anything for long periods of time right now. We've got a lot going on at work lately & hopefully we'll be opening soon. I have to say I think it's going to be more stressful to be open again then closed. For my library friends imagine it as being the worst come back from the longest 3 day weekend ever! Absoulte chaos...but we'll see what happens. I'm hoping that with things getting back to semi normal I can read more in May & then of course for summer reading.So here's recap of what I read in April & what I'm hoping to read in May....</div>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br />
This is book #3 in the Cupcake Bakery Mystery series. This was also our Cook the Books book club pick for May 2020. We have previously read the preceding books. I have to say overall this is one of my favorite series we have picked for the book club. The books are short, the characters are well developed & interesting, & the plot line is really beefing up as we continue with the series. If you like cozy mysteries that are easy to read but not boring or mindless then you will enjoy these.<br />
<br />
In this story we find out the Angie might be moving to LA to be with her rock star BF, Fairytale Cupcakes enters a cooking competition that is kinda of like Chopped or those Cupcake Wars shows on TV, & the guy who gets murdered is giving off some serious Anthony Bourdain vibes (even though this was written way before he died). Then plot twist at the end with another murder!<br />
<br />
The story was well paced but I was able to figure out who the killer was pretty quickly. I don't mind when that happens though because then throughout the entire book they kept trying to throw you off. The recipes also sounded fantastic! They were your typical desserts you find in these books but they didn't have typical ingredients which was cool, I'll include one down below for you. I would definitely recommend this book & this series to lovers of cozy mysteries!<br />
