Winifred Malladi-Maraj has an interesting living situation. Her parents are both smart doctors but they are constantly trying to one up each other. Therefore because they can't get along they decide to get divorced.
In order for things to be fair Winnie must spend equal time with both if them. That means 3 days a week she is with her dad & the other 3 days she is with her mom. Because her parents are constantly trying to be better than the other when Winnie is with them she is forced to celebrate ridiculous holidays like National Dolphin Day & World Peach Cobbler Day instead of doing normal things like homework & making dinner. The only time that Winne gets to herself is Wednesdays.
Between their 2 houses her parents have built a magnificent treehouse for Winnie to stay in during her own time. The treehouse is awesome & eve has it's own zipline so Winnie can visit her Uncle Hank if she wants to get away from her crazy parents. Because of Winnie's parents acting ridiculous all the time & her having only 1 day a week to herself her teacher informs her that if she doesn't do an excellent job on her local history report she will fail the 5th grade! That's when Winnie decides things have to change.
Winnie's treehouse has a plaque on it that says Planted by the Republic of Fittizio 1863. She thinks that is really cool although that particular republic no longer exists. But because her tree isn't technically in America that means when shes there Winnie doesn't have to follow her parents rules, she can technically do whatever she wants...right?
So in order to finish her report, pass the 5th grade, & get her parents to get along for once Winnie decides she isn't coming down until all of those things happen. Winnie has 9 friends that she has know since kindergarten & they also have problems at home like not being about to watch any show they want, & being grounded for reading too much. So her friends decide to stake out with Winnie in the treehouse until all of their demands are met.
The standoff goes on for over 2 weeks! The kids have become famous all over the country & come to be known as The Treehouse 10. It doesn't take long for the kids to start missing their families & for their families to realize they can give into the kids demands in small ways to make all their lives better. Even Winnie's parents come to their senses eventually & learn to get along (kinda). The Treehouse 10 decide to submit one big report so they can all pass 5th grade after missing school & we get to read their story. It just goes to show that small changes can have a big impact after all!

Likes: This book was pretty funny I think it's going to be a big hit with kids of all ages.

There are little sticky notes & add in's throughout that make the story interesting & go by faster.

Winnie is such a brave girl & her friends are a hoot! It's a great group of kids that are very relate able.
