Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay

Author: J.K. Rowling
Publisher: Arthur A. Levine Books (Scholastic)
Year: 2016
Genre: Fantasy (Screenplay format)
Age: 10+ (If you can read Harry Potter you can read this book)

I picked up this book for my 2017 Reading Challenge. I read the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child screenplay & really enjoyed it. This one I didn't enjoy as much but that could be because I saw the movie & LOVED it. What I loved about The Cursed Child was that it continued the story and there was a lot of dialogue. In this one, Fantastic Beasts, there was more scene & character description & less story line. Overall it wasn't a bad book though. If you'd like to read my review of HP & the Cursed Child click here. (I will warn you that it does contain spoilers including many from the original Harry Potter series so do not read it if you haven't read those)

In this story we follow Newt Scamander who is a young Magizoologist in the 1920's. The wizard Grindelwald is at large in London and the epic battle between him & Dumbledore is about 20 years away. Newt is in New York City to buy a birthday present. One of his animals, the Niffler, escapes & starts going after anything shiny he can get his hands on. Newt's case that contains all of his animals accidentally gets switched with another man's. The other man is Jacob Kowalski & he is at the bank trying to get a loan to open a bakery, his case is filled with pastries. After causing quite a bit of trouble at the bank Jacob leaves with the creatures & Newt is caught by the authorities.

Tina is an investigator with MACUSA, the Magical Congress of the USA. She must take Newt in for the scene he caused in the bank & not obliterating Jacob's memory since he saw the creatures & is a muggle or no-maj as they are called in America. It is a hostile time in New York right now, a creature is running rampant in the city destroying things & causing accidents. Investigator Graves is looking into it & he thinks something magical is behind it.

It isn't long before Jacob discovers that his case & Newt's got switched. A few of the creatures escape and it's up to Jacob, Newt, Tina, & her sister Queenie to get them back. The group run all over town collecting creatures like a Bowtruckle, a Demiguise, an Erumpent, & the Occamy. Eventually all the animals are safely returned to their home inside the case. Along the way they get mixed up with Graves' investigation of the dark magical "creature" of sorts that is causing trouble in the city. Newt is hoping that they can catch the creature & help it before it's too late, but Graves has other plans to use it to his advantage.

Likes: The best part of this story is the animals. The original book is more like a guide & there is illustrations that I think would have been fun to see in this book. There area few in here but not every animal is pictured.

There is a love interest that develops in this book between Queenie & Jacob that I think would be fun too see more of.

And of course in true J.K. Rowling fashion the bad guy is caught & good prevails for a happy ending in this story.
