This was my second audiobook of a recent trip. This also happens to be the 2nd Debbie Macomber book I've read...ever! I will say that I think I liked this book more than the other one I read because I had it on audio. I liked the audio better because there as different readers & it kept my attention more. The guy that reads in this audiobok sounds SO familiar too but I can't figure out where I recgonize his voice from. Overall I liked this book, it was quick, I was able to finish it on the entire ride. I also really liked Jack, he was really funny. The 2 different audio readers did a great job representing the characters. It had a happy ending & the story was believeable if not a little cheesy like most romance books like this are. I would definetly read another book by this author, preferably on audio if possible over book form. This was the perfect holiday trip book because of the story. So in the words of Jack...

I checked this book out a few weeks ago on the recommendation of a co-worker. It was a really fast read, I finished it in about 3 or 4 hours. Overall I liked it. This was my first book by this author & I also read one other book by her. I liked listening to one of her stories better than reading it I think, it brought more to the story. But overall this was a good Christmas book. I think I've only ever read 1 other Christmas book in my life so I need a little more variety LOL! The story was a little bit predictable with the whole thing of her hating him then they fall in love but he finds out she betrayed him storyline. I have to say through it's different from most of the other things that I typically read so it wasn't a bad book. This book falls along the same line as the mystery books I've been into lately for the book club. They are slightly predictable, not too much action or tension or anything crazy like world building & saving an entire empire, some romance usually, no sex or very little/just a hint, & the endings are either something I can figure out or something that shocks me. I would try one of her other books instead of a Christmas one now that I've read 2 of them back to back.

I think this is my 4th or 5th book by this author & so far I have liked every single one of them! The stories all follow the typical chick lit pattern of girl with a problem, she finds a way to overcome the problem, there's some conflict along the way, & always a romantic interest. I like that they are all different stories though, that are simple, & short (less than 500 pages). They are also always really funny & they have heart-warming moments thrown in too. I enjoy the audio versions as well, I like listening to someone with an accent, it keeps me going more than a regular reader.

I have yet to start her Shopaholic series but I have seen the movie several times & I really like it. I have the first 6 books in the series I think & I'm always looking for the others so I can get them all then read them. I think that's gonna be my reading goal for next year...series.

Overall this book kept my attention & made me laugh. The main character was relateable & kinda a mess (like we all are sometimes) she left her big fancy job in the city to find an escape & ended up finding a job doing something she didn't know how to do but ended up enjoying. I finished part of it on audio & part of it in book form. I had the book on my shelf from a library book sale. It was funny too because the original check out receipt was in the book  from back in 2012 when it was still on the shelf.

I just looked at the back of the audio & it says its abridged!!! I didn't know that when I started it. I'm kinda wondering what parts I missed...oh well, it was still good!

On my way back home from my trip I'll be listening to Debbie Macomber's new book "Alaskan Holiday", I'll let you know how that one is in a few days.

This was our Cook the Books book club pick for the month of December. I see these books getting checked out all the time but I haven't ever read any of them. I will say that this is now our 3rd month with these type of books & they are starting to grow on me. They are short, simple, easy to follow, & sometimes I figure out the mystery & sometimes I'm surprised at the end.

This particular book I was able to read in 1 sitting. Mine didn't include a bonus story in the back but apparently some of the other versions of it do. I originally downloaded the e book but there was no recipes in it! There was a cookie index in the back but no recipes for some reason??? So I checked out the regular hardcover version & I really want to try the recipes for the cookies! At our meeting the girl that was our host for the month decided to make the recipe for Chocolate Chip Crunchies...they were delicious! I would make them again for sure, the little pieces of cornflakes really made a difference in the texture. I'll include the recipe below.

Ingredients:
2 sticks unsalted butter, melted
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2-1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups crushed corn flakes
1 cup chocolate chip morsels

Directions:
Preheat oven 350 degrees. Rack in the middle position.

Melt butter, add the sugars and stir. Add soda, salt, vanilla, and beaten eggs. Mix well. Then add flour and stir it in. Add crushed corn flakes and chocolate chips and mix it all thoroughly.

Using a medium sized cookies scoop, scoop out cookies and place on a greased cookie sheet, about 8 per cookie sheet. Press down slightly with a floured or greased spatula.

Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool on a cookie sheet for 2 minutes, then remove to a wire rack until they're completely cool. (The rack is important - it makes them crisp.)

Hannah's Note: If these cookies spread out too much in the oven do not flatten before baking.

Overall I enjoyed this book, I didn't figure out who the killer was until the very end & was surprised with how it played out. I checked out book #2 & I'm hoping to continue reading the series over time. One of the ladies also told me at the meeting that this book series was made into movies by Hallmark channel, I'd be interesting in seeing them if I can find them on streaming. Has anyone seen them? Are they good? Worth while? Also another interesting thing I noticed about this book that seems to be a pattern is the main character is a red head & most of the other books in this genre have had the same pattern.

Our book for next month is #2 in the magical baking mysteries, it's called Bewitched, Bothered, & Biscotti by Bailey Cates. We all really enjoyed the first one so I'm looking forward to the others.

***This review will contain spoilers for this book & the rest of the series***

This is the 8th & final book in the Throne of Glass series. I have done several reviews over the years on the other books in the series that can be found on my blog. I usually listen to these books on audio but the audio version wasn't available so I opted to buy the whole series on ebook. I plan to do a reread in the future.

Let me start by saying that the ending in the previous book Empire of Storms was really rough for me. When you spend years becoming attached to this place & these characters its hard to see them go through enormous hardship. When Maeve locked Aelin inside the box after beating her on the beach then Rowan came but he was too late it absolutely broke me. So when the next book, that was more of a filler story, was published, Tower of Dawn, I didn't have high expectations. I enjoyed that book but only some new info was given about those characters & nothing was said about the Queen of Terrasen.

So here we are 2 years after Empire of Storms & we are finally getting to hear the rest of the story...

The books length allowed for many different parts of the story to finalize then come together for the final battle. That was something I liked. It took me 11 days to read it in total & most of that reading was done on the weekends. Overall I think the length of the book was used wisely in terms of telling the story & finalizing the journey.

There were two things that I was worried about when going into reading this book. I'll break them down & talk about what happened before I go into the book overall & my feelings.
1. Would Aelin get free from Maeve & survive to see the war?
2. Which one, Aelin or Dorian, would make the sacrifice to forge the lock?

1. Aelin was trapped in Doranelle in that iron coffin covered in chains for almost 3 months. It seemed like longer, especially to her. But when she finally got free I was expecting Rowan to be the first person she saw, it was actually Lorcan. I was still really happy when she finally got out, I knew she could do it. And I cried...a lot...basically throughout the entire book but especially as she came up over that hill, sword in hand still chained up & she had fought her way out. Him, Rowan, Gavriel, & Elide were the ones looking for Aelin while everyone else was preparing for war. When Rowan & Aelin do finally meet the reunion was happy but it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be like. Aelin is obviously slightly mentally unstable & she has a breakdown in the woods once she is free. Because of the way she is chained up only she knows how to unlock the locks with the wyardmarks...the irony of that is sickening. Eventually she starts to become her normal self thankfully. I was a little disappointed that it took about 250 pages of the story to free her, there was a lot of other stuff happening in between that I didn't entirely pay attention to honestly because I just kept thinking about them freeing her! But I was also happy that it happened early on in the book as opposed to like 500 or 600 pages in. Her captor Carin does get what he deserves in the end, inflicted on him by Rowan's hands. Unfortunately Fenrys's twin Connall is killed by Maeve for spite & Fenrys himself is almost lost as well. Luckily everyone hangs in there until the big ending battle.

2. This second part made me even more nervous then the first. I kept thinking that she obviously can't kill Aelin...it can't happen! That would be going into Veronica Roth territory & that's not a place you want to be as an author. I would have considered that loss on the same level as Harry dying, which is not ok. I will say that after all has been said & done I'm still kinda confused about this portion of the book. I'm happy that it went in a more positive way but I don't understand why it happened the way it did. Aelin & Dorian go to Endovier of all places to forge the lock. Rowan & Chaol go with them just in case & to say goodbye. This is after Aelin lets everyone in their group at the time take a vote to decide what to do & when...WTF!? Aelin & Dorian decide outside of that, that they can both do it together & maybe live instead of one of them dying completely. So once the whole process begins they realize that both of them are going to need to die to forge the lock not just one of them. But then out of the depths Dorian's dad, the dead King of Adarlan, shows up & tells them that he can also forge the lock from the spirit world or whatever since her is "nameless" like the key describes "Nameless is my Price". I was following up until there pretty good. But then...it starts to get weird. From there all the gods appear & Aelin tries to bargain with them, Elena's life for Erawan's. I guess I never understood or really took any mind to Elena & Gavin & that whole thing so I don't know why this part was included. But the gods do not want to make a bargain with a "mortal" so they kill Elena & Aelin is stuck then with no gods, no powers, & Erawan & Maeve........hopefully you can understand some of my worry & confusion here. Meanwhile Aelin has also pushed Dorian back through the portal & so her & his dad are going to forge the lock. Aelin does come out of it alive thankfully after she is pushed between the different wolds, but she is just an ordinary Fae & can't switch between forms anymore & has no more of her fire powers. I guess that's better than being dead.

As you can probably tell I have been very conflicted over this story. Some parts I was really happy about & others I was confused by. I'll give you an example.

The ending......

It was hard, there were some big losses like The Thirteen & Gavriel, I lost it over The Thirteen, like ugly crying. But at the end Aelin is standing there with no powers in front of Maeve & Erawan & she needs the help of her friends to save the world. One group that consists of Elide, Dorian, Lysandra, & Yrene take Erawan & handle him, since Yrene has that special Valg killing light power. The others including Aelin, Rowan, Fenrys, & Lorcan handle Maeve but they almost don't make it. So here is why I'm conflicted....after ALL THAT...THIS ENTIRE JOURNEY...Aelin doesn't even kill Erawan, she can barely handle Maeve. But on the other hand it allowed some of the other characters to step up & help fight evil & Aelin didn't have to do it herself.

That is the kind of thing I felt the entire book! One second I was so happy I was crying then the next I was like ummmm....no LOL. In the end though I am happy overall that there was minimal losses & everyone ended up happily ever after..kinda. I think if I go back eventually & reread the whole series back to back maybe the ending & the lock & all of that will be more justified for me???

A few more things I'd like to add before I wrap up this SUPER LONG rant...I mean "review" LOL.

Dorian risks his own life to go to Morath of all places & get the final key from Erawan, so badass! But he & Maeve have this sort of pact set up & I knew she was gonna screw him in the end. She did of course, but just when I was starting to worry he turns the whole thing around on her & then blows up Morath. OMG it was so good! I've never been more proud of the little princeling. Dorian also faces a struggle in the end with his father "dying" or passing on or whatever you want to call it in the spirit world. But we do finally learn the name of the "nameless" king that struggled with the Valg for years, unknown to the rest of the world, it was heart wrenching but beautiful.

Next is Manon Blackbeak. Her story has been building over the last few books & she played a significant role in the ending. I have loved her since she stood up to her grandmother & almost died fighting for The Thirteen. But in this book she kills one of the other matrons & takes back her rightful place among the Crochans as Queen of the Witches. This was another moment where I was like YES YES YES!!!!!! Then when Abraxos is injured & she can't fight against the witch tower, Asterin, as her dutiful second take the lead & off into the darkness they go to save the world, it was awful but beautiful all the same.

So through all the years & tears & fears this story is finally over, things are right again, & the journey is over for our cadre, but it was all for a better world...

I originally tried to read this in book form but it was too hard to follow between all the different letters & characters. So I tried the audiobook & it was fabulous. The different readers really make the story come to life. It was easy to follow in the audio version. Overall the story was really good. It was a little bit sad to hear about the war & the things that happened. It's also a little scary to realize that it's based on true events. I'm using the book for my book challenge list as my book that is about WWII.

After I read the book I watched the movie on Netflix. I kinda wish I had watched the movie first because it was NOTHING like the book. The characters in the movie were younger than I pictured from the book. The cast of the movie was good but only about 5 of the original characters were included. The story line of the movie & the storyline of the book were very different. In the book Juliet becomes friendly with the group before going to Guernsey, this process takes place over the course of months. Then she goes to visit the island & ultimately stays there with Dawsey & Kit. The ending is the same in the book & the movie at least. The way Juliet is treated in the movie is completely different from the relationships that form in the book. Long story short...do NOT let the movie influence your decision on the book.

At the end of it all I would recommend the audiobook highly but not the movie so much.

This book was recommended to me by a coworker. It is absolutely not like anything I would normally read but she said I'd be surprised.

Beauty & Poison by Sarah Pinbrough
This is book #1 & #3 in the Tales from the Kingdom series by this author. I saw the book Charm on the shelf this last month & it looked really good. It was! So now I have to wait for these to come in on ILL. When I'm done I'm going to do a series review because these are really short.
